SCANS Bylaws

Article I

The name of the corporation is the South Carolina Association of Neurological Surgeons (SCANS or "the Association").

Article II

The purpose and goals of SCANS are:

  1. To promote educational opportunities and exchange of ideas among neurosurgeons in South Carolina
  2. To bring together in a representative organization neurosurgeons in South Carolina in order to better promote and foster quality care for neurosurgical patients

Article III

Active Membership in SCANS shall include South Carolina licensed neurosurgeons board certified or board eligible who pay annual dues and maintain accepted standards of medicine and neurosurgery.

Affiliate Membership in SCANS shall include licensed physicians, nurse practitioners, nurses or other health care providers in South Carolina or adjoining states, who have an interest in the advancement of neurosurgery in South Carolina and pay annual dues and maintain accepted standards of medicine and neurosurgery.

Retired Membership shall include retired physicians in South Carolina or adjoining states who have an interest in the advancement of neurosurgery in South Carolina and pay annual dues and maintain accepted standards of medicine and neurosurgery.

Article IV

The offers of SCANS shall consist of a president, vice-president, and treasurer. The officers shall be elected for two year terms by the Active Membership at the annual meeting.

The SCANS representative to the Council of State Neurosurgical Societies shall also be elected for a two year term by the Active Membership at the annual meeting. This official as well as any of the other officers shall be expected to represent the interest of the Association at any local or national meetings.

If a vacancy occurs among any of the officers, the affairs of SCANS shall be administered by the next in line officer until the next annual meeting where a new officer can be elected by the Active Membership. Interim appointments may be made by the president.

Only those individuals who qualify for "Active Membership" shall have voting privileges within the Association.

Article V

SCANS shall meet on an annual basis. The location, timing, and content of the meeting shall be the primary responsibility of the officers of the Association.

The president shall preside over all meetings and may appoint any necessary committees to further the aims of SCANS.

The dues and fees of SCANS shall be established by the Active Membership at the annual meeting.

Any assets of SCANS shall be used for the annual meeting or other charitable or educational purposed as determined by the majority of the Active Membership present at the annual meeting.

Article VI

These Bylaws may be amended by a majority vote of the Active Membership.

If the Association dissolves for any reason, the assets are to be distributed to a non-profit organization to be determined by the Active Membership.
