2007 Annual Meeting Minutes
Minutes of the South Carolina Association of Neurological Surgeons
(Submitted by William B. Naso MD)
The South Carolina Association of Neurological Surgeons met on Saturday November 3, 2007 at the Storm Eye Institute, Charleston, South Carolina. The meeting was called to order at 8am. The first order of business was election of officers. The following officers were elected:
President: William Naso MD
Vice-President: George Khoury MD
Secretary: Christie Mina MD
Christopher Paramore MD was chosen as representative from South Carolina to the Council of State Neurosurgical Societies.
By unanimous consent the association voted to make a $10,000 donation to the MUSC Foundation to be applied to the Phanor L. Perot Endowed Chair in Spinal Cord Injury. This check was given to Dr. Sunil Patel by Dr. Naso at the afternoon symposium held in honor of Dr. Perot.
The goals of the society were discussed by the general membership present. It was agreed to proceed with the development of a web site for the South Carolina Association of Neurological Surgeons. Letters will be sent to individual neurosurgeons practicing in South Carolina for formal inclusion in the society and to request payment of annual dues of $100. A survey will be developed and sent to the membership to help determine future sites and times for the association's annual meeting. A statewide meeting is tentatively planned for spring of 2008.
The members present also felt that as a statewide society we are in a position to address public health issues that impact our specialty. It was agreed to develop a task force to address the need for a helmet law for motorcyclists in South Carolina.
The following neurosurgeons were present for the meeting: James Brennan, Christopher Chittum, Brian Cuddy, Phil Esce, Robert Flandry, Bruce Frankle, Mark Gerber, Gene Giddens, Bret Gunter, George Khoury, Christie Mina, William Naso, Sunil Patel, Phanor Perot, William Rambo, Stephen Rawe, Linwood Smith, Alex Vandergrift, Cristian Vera, and Curtis Worthington.
The general business meeting was followed by a series of well received lectures including talks on cervical disc arthroplasty (Dr. Gunter), minimally invasive spine surgery (Dr. Mina), pediatric brain tumors (Dr. Smith), new treatment protocols for glioblastoma (Dr. Frankle), vertebral augmentation techniques (Dr. Frankle), neurosurgery in the developing world (Dr. Rambo), and early neurosurgery in Charleston (Dr. Cuddy).
After a brief recap of the day's events the meeting was adjourned at 11:50am and followed by lunch at a nearby restaurant.
